Happy 2018! If you are like most people, you have made a commitment (or dare I say, a resolution) to be more active and healthier in the new year. If running is included in that activity, by all means try doing 5k’s. They are fun, quick, inexpensive and plentiful. They will most likely take your running to a higher level. How? Because they are addictive! If you are anything like me, once you do a 5k, you’ll want to do another one…and another one…and another one. Especially once you get Bling!
If you are thinking about 5k’s and don’t know where to start, I have a few suggestions. If you live in metro Atlanta or North Georgia like I do, I highly recommend Five Star NTP. They host road races of different lengths (5/10/Half/Full Marathons) all over metro Atlanta and North Georgia. You can find them at http://www.fivestarntp.com. They have races year round, most every weekend. If you have made a resolution to run a 5k once a month or even once a week, Five Star can definitely help you out with your commitment. They also love to make participants happy by giving away as much bling (race medals) as possible. In addition to the typical awards for Overall Male & Female and Age Group winners, they expand as much as possible to include Overall Masters, Grand Masters and Senior Grand Masters winners. Their Age Groups are the top 3 in 5-year increments. The more categories, the more winners…more Bling for more people!
There are two more websites I recommend for finding races all over Georgia and the U.S.: RunGeorgia.com & RunningInTheUSA.com. Running In The USA is a particularly good website for finding a race in a fun destination for a road trip or a race-cation. I love doing races in different states. So far, I’ve run in Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Oregon.
If you are thinking about adding 5k’s to your workout routine, I say “Do It!” Find a local race, register, lay your running clothes out the night before, leave early enough to find the venue & park, pick up your bib, use the bathroom, warm up, work out your butterflies, meet people, run, get your t-shirt & bling and, above all, Have Fun!
Happy New Running Year!
